Images and illustrations are a great way to add some professionalism to a piece of work. Images add a visual element that is appealing to content users. Images are tricky though because of their copyright infringements. Images found on the web have rights to someone else. Taking a photo from the internet and directly copying over is a copyright infringement. Some different ways to avoid committing copyright infringement are creative commons licenses, rights-managed, and more.
Creative Commons is a set of licenses that enable lawful collaboration to copy, share, and remix. Creative Commons gives everyone permission to use creative works. A lot of very popular sources of media use these licenses, like YouTube, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, and many more. They include audio and video stock, royalty free works as well as photos. Creative commons has 6 different types of licensing here is an example of 3 different types of Creative Commons’ licenses;
- Attribution ShareAlike CC BY-SA- the most lenient form of licensing, This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation.
- Attribution ShareAlike CC BY-SA- this type of licensing is used by wikipedia, same as the license above except they must credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms.
- Attribution-NoDerivs CC BY-ND- this license just allows for the redistribution, both commercial and non-commercial, as long as it is unchanged and the whole credit goes to the creator.
